Curriculum

To develop passionate young people with the skills to make a positive contribution to a modern Britain and the 21st century global economy

At the School of Science and Technology (SST) we recognise the importance of excellent academic outcome. However, we believe that for students to be successful and happy in this challenging and competitive world, it is also necessary for them to be equipped with more than good examination results.  Meeting the needs of a rapidly changing 21st century workforce through innovative teaching and learning is at the heart of the SST mission. We will build core competencies and life skills to complement academic excellence through a dynamic, broad and balanced curriculum alongside the extra-curricular programme.

It is our aim that during their time at SST, students will become knowledgeable, independent, innovative, ambitious, articulate, global-minded and considerate. They will develop skills and character traits such as leadership, organisation, resilience, and communication. Our students also aspire to aim high to achieve their full potential and be nurtured to become life-long learners who are prepared for the modern world.

We seek to challenge and stimulate the minds of our students through outstanding teaching, excellent opportunities to learn beyond the classrooms and a rich and balanced curriculum. We are proud of our curriculum as it provides challenge, pace, and variety at all levels to suit individual students. We aim to prepare, motivate and inspire our students to go beyond their classroom based learning and answer the ‘big questions’ as our curriculum enables students to draw links across subjects.

Our curriculum demonstrates our firm belief in social justice, ensuring that all students have access to the best learning opportunities in and outside the classroom, which is supported by state-of-the-art IT facilities and use of technology as a learning tool in the classroom.

We design our curriculum to provide our students with an exciting, stimulating and challenging learning journey throughout their school career at SST. The Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to provide both breadth and depth beyond the national curriculum and aims to equip students with a broad range of knowledge, skills and the academic discipline, together with the keenness to learn new things. The schemes of work across the subjects are thoughtfully designed around termly themes which make learning interesting and relevant.

The Foundation Year programme is an exciting bridging year laying a firm foundation for GCSE; it is during this year that our students will benefit from our bespoke programme of study that goes beyond the National Curriculum. The Foundation Year curriculum covers topics that enables wider understanding of the world with diversity and inclusivity at the heart of our design.

During Year 10 and 11, students will work towards at least 9 GCSEs to include Science, a Humanities subject and a Language. Almost every SST student takes the English Baccalaureate and follows a comprehensive Personal Development programme. Our Key Stage 4 curriculum goes beyond the requirement of GCSEs and Level 2 Btec, equipping students with oracy, thinking, research and leadership skills. The Curriculum is sequenced and planned to allow students to draw links within and across subjects and relate learning to real life, making the learning journey very stimulating. Our students study a wide range of subjects for GCSE, from Art to Music, Psychology to Food & Nutrition. All students are encouraged to opt for a creative subject and make the most of the plethora of opportunities to learn beyond the classroom.

The Sixth Form curriculum will offer a broad choice of almost 30 subjects for students to choose from as we work collaboratively across the campus. Student personal and academic passions can be explored through the Extended Project Qualification which, along with our enriching Personal Development programme, prepares students with work related skills for life in modern Britain.

We believe our academic curriculum is challenging, exciting and designed specifically for our keen learners, whilst catering for the variety of needs from our individual students.
