Travel Plan
Travel Plan 2025
Our Travel Plan, last updated in July 2025, helps improve how students and staff travel to and from school. It aims to reduce car use, promote walking, cycling, and public transport, and make the school environment safer and healthier.
Key Goals
- Encourage sustainable travel – walking, cycling, car sharing, and public transport.
- Improve safety – safer routes and road awareness for students.
- Reduce congestion – especially during drop-off and pick-up times.
- Promote healthy lifestyles – more active travel options.
- Improve air quality – fewer cars means less pollution.
Current Travel Snapshot
- 42.5% of pupils walk to school.
- 11.4% cycle, with 200 secure bike spaces (recently increased from 100).
- 29.7% arrive by car alone – the school aims to reduce this.
- Less than 5% use public transport, partly due to cost, convenience and access to routes.
Targets by July 2026
- Increase walking to 50%.
- Reduce solo car travel to 25%.
- Increase cycling to 15%.
- Double staff car sharing from 5% to 10%.
What’s Already in Place
- Safe footpaths and crossings.
- Secure, covered cycle parking.
- The school operates a dedicated drop-off loop on-site, with gates opening at 7:45am and 2:45pm to allow parents sufficient time to access the site. These timings are carefully managed to maintain site security while supporting smooth drop-off and pick-up routines.
- We actively promote Kent Bikeability cycle training and remain committed to ensuring students cycle safely. As part of this, students who do not wear helmets may receive behaviour sanctions to reinforce the importance of safe cycling.
- Regular reminders to avoid parking in residential areas.
- Alternate staff parking arrangements for school events, ensuring our carparks are empty for Open Evenings for visitors.
- Assemblies and newsletters to raise awareness.
- Travel buddy system for new Year 7s.
What’s Coming Next
- Continued commitment to communicate with both parents and students regarding their travel to and from school, encouraging walking or cycling wherever possible.
- Staff car share register.
- Flyers to local residents before school events.
- Annual travel surveys to monitor progress.
- Working with community groups in the local parish council (Boxley and Maidstone Parish Council).
