Photography
A-Level Photography is a creative, rigorous qualification that emphasises practical and theoretical skills in photographic techniques, visual storytelling, and self-expression. It builds critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence, while helping students develop a strong, portfolio-based foundation for creative careers or further study.
Topics and Module Outline

Personal Investigation (Component 1):
An independent practical investigation exploring an idea, issue, concept, or theme chosen by the student, supported by extended written analysis (1000–3000 words). Leads to finished photographic outcomes or a series of related works.

Externally Set Assignment (Component 2):
Students choose and respond to one of eight exam prompts, producing practical work and annotated commentary, with a supervised final piece produced under timed conditions.

Cultural and Historical Contexts:
Study of the origins, movements, and cultural significance of photographs, enriching students' appreciation and contextual understanding of their own and others' work.
Entry Requirements
5 (or above) in an Art and Design subject or submission of an accepted portfolio in advance.

Assessment Structure

Practical project plus written material, accounts for 60% of the final grade.

Progression Pathways
A-Level Photography supports access to BA degrees in Photography, Fashion Photography, Commercial Photography, Documentary Photography, and Fine Art Photography at leading UK universities. It is a strong foundation for apprenticeships (Photographic Assistant, Junior Content Producer, VFX Technician, Media/Broadcast Assistant, Digital Marketing) and creative industry roles (Freelance Photographer, Studio Assistant, Photo Editor, Event Photographer, Social Media Content Creator). Foundation Diplomas and short creative courses are alternative pathways for portfolio-building.
