World Book Day
This year, World Book Day fell on Thursday, 5 March, giving students and staff alike the chance to share and celebrate their love of reading. It is a well-advertised fact that frequently reading for pleasure can provide a number of benefits to students, from an improved vocabulary to supported mental health, so it was amazing to see so many students eagerly taking part in the activities on offer. The day began with ‘The Mystery of the Missing Story’, a virtual escape room set inside the SST building. A sequel to last year’s ‘Escape the Library of Stories, Secrest and Treasures’, this form time activity challenged students to find missing words from an enchanted book, which were spreading chaos across the school.
While in form time, students were also given a bingo sheet to complete throughout the day. The aim of this activity was to collect five words from members of staff in costume. The resulting phrase – ‘Reading books is my superpower’, could then be exchanged for a lollipop or small bag of Haribo. Ms Lycett and Miss Garland were blown away by students’ engagement with this activity across all year groups, and hope they enjoyed taking part! However, the real stars of the show were the staff who came to school dressed in creative and detailed costumes. From Miss Trunchbull from Matilda to Stranger Things’ Eddie Munson, Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games and Snow White, SST was populated by a diverse cast of characters who were eager to share why they loved the stories that inspired their outfits. A special shoutout goes to Ms Jones, who brought in her pet snake to be the Nagini to Mr Royston’s Voldermort costume!
