VIAT Speaking Competition
The Lenham School was our host for this year’s VIAT Speaks Public Speaking Competition on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, with grateful thanks to Mr Ferguson, Head Teacher. Once again, all students who entered from The Lenham School, Valley Park School, Invicta Grammar School for Girls and School of Science and Technology rose to the challenge with their thought-provoking speeches. All students had two heats; in Heat 1 students delivered a pre prepared speech on one of the following topics: Red, Global, Potential and Curiosity. Followed by Heat 2 – where students had 25 minutes in which to create a 2-minute speech on unseen material, choosing one area from a choice of four controversial topics:
-Free speech is dead
-The world has changed since Covid
-AI should be regulated o Social influencers only further their own career
Students were judged by an esteemed panel consisting of Mrs Webb - Locality Service Manager for East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust and IGS Governor, Miss Jenner - Personal Development Coordinator at SST and Staff Governor and Mr Homes - Extended Learning Co-ordinator and Teacher of Mathematics at IGS. Our panel judged each student on:
- Content and Organisation
- Purpose and Clarity
- Structure and Flow Delivery
- Vocal delivery
- Enthusiasm and Passion
